In July and August this year KFA commenced a community project targeted at training local Kimberley people in recording rock art, flora and fauna. The training draws on the cultural and environmental knowledge of the local communities as well as being firmly grounded in science. Read more

The pilot, Developing Skills in Recording Kimberley Rock Art Flora & Fauna was funded by the WA Department of Indigenous Affairs and individual KFA contributors. Partnering KFA was Kimberley TAFE and the Kalumburu and Mowanjum communities. KFA was also supported by Conservation Ark (Royal Zoological Society of SA), Wildlife Unlimited (Vic) and the elders and trainees of Kalumburu and the Majaddin clan. The project reflected a growing demand for Aboriginal local people skilled in both traditional and scientific knowledge to lead tourism in the area.

Chairman of the Kimberley Foundation, Maria Myers, says the enthusiasm for the training and the feedback from participants has given KFA the confidence to continue the program in 2012. We have been approached by other communities interested in the training and we will continue to provide this service.

In order for the rock art to be preserved, the distribution of the rock art styles need to be studied and understood, chartered, classified and recorded. A major goal of the Kimberley Foundation is to establish a program whereby the rock art of the Kimberley is mapped and recorded with the assistance and support of the local Aboriginal communities. Future planning of the Kimberley must proceed with the full knowledge of sites of cultural significance. KFA has taken on this important task as a major long-term project.

Precious cultural heritage

Kimberley Rock Art Surveyors Group In July KFA hosted a gathering in the north Kimberley of 25 amateurs and academics known as the Kimberley Surveyors Group to ascertain how much of the rock art of...

Kimberley Rock Art Surveyors Group

In July KFA hosted a gathering in the north Kimberley of 25 amateurs and academics known as the Kimberley Surveyors Group to ascertain how much of the rock art of the Kimberley has been searched. The Surveyors Group also sought to obtain agreement on a common methodology in recording rock art, sharing rock art information and promoting a greater understanding of Kimberley rock art. Read more.
